Creating a safer, more inclusive, and environmentally aware Willamette River community.

We envision a diverse community connected to the Willamette river through recreation with improved safety, access, education and stewardship.

THE PROBLEM

Below the I-5 bridge in Glenwood, Oregon, The Mill Race Headworks diversion dams pose a deadly threat to recreation on the Willamette River. A recent fatality on the site shows evidence of the significance of this hazard. River recreators floating this section of river must navigate around the dams in order to safely pass underneath the bridge. The increase of outdoor recreation in 2020 has compelled us to seek a solution to this hazard.

Our team of volunteers has conducted extensive background research on similar sites throughout the United States, met with governing agencies and generated stakeholder interest and community support.

We believe recreation is the solution to revitalizing this neglected section of the Willamette River.

CORE VALUES

EQUITY

We believe that everyone should feel invited to play in the Willamette River. We recognize that institutional racism impacts the sense of belonging, necessary knowledge and equipment required to access opportunities to recreate and explore the river. Increasing demographic diversity and considering the diverse needs of Willamette River recreators guiding our work.

PLAY

Play is a basic human need. People who play are resilient, empathetic, and active. Through play, humans learn to make friends, solve problems, and believe in themselves. The Willamette river offers abundant opportunities to recreate and play. Our board is inspired by the power of play and motivated to make it accessible to all.

SAFETY

Outdoor recreation is serious fun. Playing in the river requires an attitude of responsibility to self and others. We are committed to reducing the likelihood of injury while recreating by increasing safety measures and educational opportunities for Willamette River recreators.

STEWARDSHIP

Well-guided recreation can improve environmental ethics. We aim to leave the Willamette River better than we found it. Including habitat, fish and wildlife populations and water quality.
